Proverbs - Wisdom for Living

Pride and Humility

Proverbs 21:4; 22:4; 28:19 The tussle between pride and humility is one that every person walks daily. However, more often than not, the temptation and allure of pride wins the appeal of our hearts. Proverbs helps us understand the nature of our prideful ways, and offers a solution to our struggles: the fear of the Lord.

Speech and the power of the tongue

Proverbs 12:19-20, 22; 26:20-25 How often do you underestimate the power of your speech? While words might seem like they carry little power when compared to action, the book of Proverbs seems to disagree. As we explore what wisdom the scriptures contain on this topic, we’re going to see that God calls Christians to steward our words carefully and also, how our speech is actually a window into the state of our hearts.

God’s wisdom on work

Proverbs 10:4-5 & 24:30-34 Our work takes up so much of our lives, and for many of us is a significant part of our sense of identity. Work can be incredibly fulfilling, but also intensely frustrating. Come with us to the Book of Proverbs as we discover God’s wisdom on work, and as we consider the place it should have in our lives as followers of Jesus.

Dining with Wisdom

Proverbs 8 & 9 Proverbs 8 and 9 paint a picture for us of Woman Wisdom and Woman Folly. Each of them calls us to dine with them, to learn from them, to be shaped by them. The choice for us is clear – will we choose wisdom or folly, life or death?

Wisdom and Foolishness

Proverbs 1:20-33 Here, the author personifies wisdom in the form of a Lady who offers instruction to the foolish. Sadly, they reject her call and end up living a life that leads to destruction. We too, are foolish, and often think that our ways are best. But this passage highlights the journey of the fool and warns readers of following that same path.

The Beginning of Wisdom

Proverbs 1:1-7 So many situations in life are not simply a matter of right and wrong. There is grey in between the black and white. We need wisdom to live well in God’s world. The Book of Proverbs offers us this wisdom from God, and tells us that true wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord.
