What We Believe

City North Statement of Belief

Our beliefs are grounded in the Bible and shape how we live, worship, and serve together as a church.

We believe in the complete, unqualified, verbal inspiration by God of the original documents of the Old and New Testament Scriptures and that the Bible is God-breathed, inerrant, providentially preserved and therefore constitutes the supreme standard and final authority for all matters of conduct, faith and doctrine.

We believe in one God, the Creator and Sustainer of all things, Who exists in three equal divine Persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

We believe in:

  1. His eternal existence as God
  2. His incarnation, virgin birth, and sinless life
  3. His substitutionary death on the cross as the atonement for sin
  4. His literal bodily resurrection from the dead
  5. His present High Priestly ministry in heaven
  6. His future bodily return to earth in power and glory

We believe the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify Christ. In the work of salvation the Holy Spirit convicts people of sin and leads them to repentance. Immediately upon conversion the Holy Spirit baptises them into Christ, regenerates, indwells and seals them for eternity. We believe that for ongoing Christian living and witness, the Holy Spirit fills those who continually submit to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. He anoints the believer bestowing gifts of the Spirit for service and manifests the fruit of the Spirit in the consecrated life.

We believe Adam and Eve were originally created without sin in God’s image and likeness. Through the rebellion of Adam and Eve against God all humanity as a consequence of their action inherited from birth a sinful nature. In this sinful depraved state humanity is separated from God and unable to save itself. Without God’s salvation humanity is under the condemnation of God’s eternal punishment in hell.

We believe that salvation from the penalty, consequences and power of sin is to be found only through the substitutionary reconciling death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. We believe that for salvation it is necessary for people to repent of their sin and to exercise faith in the Lord Jesus Christ acknowledging Him as their Saviour and Lord.

We believe in the actual existence of Satan who is the father of all evil and is opposed to God. However, he is ultimately subject to the purposes of God and as a defeated foe is destined to be confined forever to the lake of fire.

We believe the Church is the body of Christ made up of all believers in the Lord Jesus Christ. The Church finds its visible manifestation in the local community of believers and ministers through the co-operative exercise of God-given gifts by the believers.

We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ instituted two ordinances:

  1. Baptism by immersion of believers upon profession of their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as a symbol of their union with Him in His death, burial, and resurrection
  2. The Lord’s Supper being a memorial and proclamation of the sacrifice of the body and blood of the Lord Jesus Christ until He comes
