Speaker: Dr. Anthony Petterson

Anthony is married to Megan and they have two sets of twins – Luke and Emma (15) and Sophie and Hugh (12)!! He teaches Old Testament at Morling College in Sydney. Before that he was pastor of Hornsby Heights Baptist Church in Sydney and then associate pastor at Grosvenor Road Baptist Church in Dublin, Ireland for four years. While overseas he did a PhD on the messianic hope in the book of Zechariah and is currently writing a commentary on Zechariah. Anthony is also active in ministry at Macquarie Baptist Church (next to Macquarie Uni). He enjoys orienteering, fishing, jazz music and watching his kids play sport. Anthony will be helping us to understand “Faith Alone” in the Old Testament.

Talks: Dr. Petterson will give the following talks…

1. Faith Alone from the Law: is on the opening chapters of Exodus, with a focus on Moses and the tensions of faith – living between two worlds (Egypt and Israel). Also his encounter of God at the “not-burning but aflame bush” and his call to trust God to deliver on his promises. Moses doubts, but is called to faith. Faith is trusting in the God who has revealed Himself (not our own beliefs about god or “religion”). Faith in His promises/his Word.

2. Faith Alone from the Prophets: is on the encounter between Isaiah and Ahaz in Isaiah 7, particularly verse 9: “If you do not stand firm in faith, you will not stand at all”. This is more of a talk about the perils of not having faith in God. There is also some interesting stuff with the Immanuel sign and links to the Mary and Joseph story and their faith. The challenge is to trust God when the world seems against you.

3. Faith Alone from the Writings: is on Job particularly highlighting how “faith” is a key issue in the book. “Faith” is expressed in the wisdom literature as “fear of the Lord”. We will look at what faith looks like in suffering and when we don’t have all the answers.
