Sharing Christ…A Way of Life

Sharing Christ…A Way of Life

2011 is now up and running with all the regular ministries of the church now in action.  I wonder what God will do among us this year? Personally I have never been a great fan of catchy slogans or sound-bite vision statements.  Often they have more to do with slick marketing strategy than good theology.  In my opinion things like vision and purpose and goals should be pretty much the same for every Christian and every church every year.  Sounds boring, I know!  But the Bible is clear about how we should approach our life with God and with each other, and how we should busy ourselves in the work of His kingdom.  In that sense we should roll up our sleeves and look forward to “more of the same” in 2011.

However, there is one area at City North where I believe most of us can approach our faith with more gusto, and that is in the area of evangelism.  Most of us say to ourselves, if not out aloud, “that’s not my gift”…..and we may be right!  But the Bible makes it clear that we all have a part to play in the work of the gospel.  As Christians who engage with the real world we cannot escape the fact that we are “Christ’s ambassadors” and that “God (is) making His appeal through us” (2 Corinthians 5:20). What is this appeal?  Simply that other people  –  our family, our friends, our neighbours, those we work with or play sport with or mix with socially  –  might be “reconciled to God” (v.21).  How can that happen?  Well, there is only one way, and that is through the sharing of the gospel of Jesus Christ.  The Greek word for gospel literally means “good news”.  We are all to be the bearers of this good news to those closest to us.

While some Christians have a special gift of evangelism, and we praise God for this, gospel work is normally a process that involves a team of people.  This is where the rest of us come in.  It is our privilege to play some part in helping others get reconciled to God through faith in Jesus Christ.  In fact it ought to be one of the greatest joys of every Christian.

  • In clear and simple terms, what is the gospel?  How can we share it in a short meaningful conversation?
  • What about those tricky questions that often accompany gospel conversations? (nothing is ever as straightforward as we’d like in evangelism!).
  • How can we build bridges to earn the right to share Christ?
  • How can we work together (eg. in small group settings) to share Christ?
  • What about more training with resources such as Christianity Explained?
  • And what about special events and guest services to help us in our sharing?

As a church we want to offer help in all these areas and more in 2011.

So forget the excuses and fears.  Admit your natural reluctance to speak up.  Confront your busyness (or is that selfishness?).  Start by praying.  Remind yourself of the power of the gospel in your own life.  And commit yourself to being an ambassador for Christ.  To help us all in this process we will adopt a catchphrase this year, which I hope will be a reminder to us of the way God wants every Christian to live (every year!):  “Sharing Christ……a way of life”.

And if we all take this challenge seriously, I trust that God will honour His gospel and that we will see many new believers joining us at City North over the next few years.  Won’t that be wonderful!

Please join us as we seek to become a more gospel-focused, mission-hearted church.
