It’s been said that what people today really want is certainty. They want something that offers stability, security, safety…..something solid upon which to build their lives.
With financial institutions failing, political systems faltering and families crumbling, there is a great need for confidence. And with attacks on Christianity and the credibility of the church in 2012, many Christians today are likewise experiencing a crisis of belief. Am I really a Christian? Have I been kidding myself? How do I know? Can I be sure?
The book of 1 John is written against a similar backdrop, to remind Christians of the essentials of their faith and to reassure them …..”so that you may know that you have eternal life” (1 John 5:13). In a day when there are many cheap imitations, especially among Christians, how can we pick the fake from the real? In this letter we find out, and discover that real faith really is certain faith.
